When I had my own child, working on books for him seemed natural. We designed clever little homemade ones… with moving parts and pop-ups.
I didn’t know it was supposed to be difficult to land a book deal, so I sent off my samples. Things fell into place quickly, which reinforced the notion I was on the right path. Every book I’ve ever illustrated, regardless of the given text, has an abundance of animals… I just add them in.
